Really excellent article from Tom Ewing in The Guardian yesterday, which teases out some of the interesting contradictions at the heart of the steadily rising buzz about The Weeknd. For my part i like their mixtape, especially when it hews closest to The-Dream’s more angsty moments (like “The Morning”, a clear standout for me), but i agree that the songwriting isn’t always there yet. Regardless, you can expect this pair to get a lot more coverage than any conventional R&B album this year. You can download House of Balloons here

Don’t know much about these guys - a brief googling stint reveals they’re a trio from Brooklyn - but i’m enjoying this track that The Fader have available for free download. A leisurely eleven minutes or so of twinkly synths, sombre violin and some vaguely Nico-esque vocals. This is going straight in my “zoning out in 2011” pile, alongside Destroyer’s “The Laziest River.”

So shadowy dubstep enigma Burial and alleged old-school chum Four Tet are teaming up with superfan Thom Yorke for a collaborative 12” out later this month. The limited release sold out within nanoseconds of it’s announcement this morning but no doubt some enterprising soul will release it into the internet wilds once they have it. Burial and Four Tet’s last teamup was on the thoroughly satisfactory Moth/Wolf Cub so we know they’ve got chemistry, hopefully the addition of third wheel Yorke doesn’t spoil the magic. You’ll be able to hear the tracks for the first time on a special Four Tet vs. Floating Points show on Rinse FM tonight at 11.

I never really liked Brandy. Granted, apart from The Boy Is Mine (a deathless classic obviously) my primary exposure to her came in the form of after school episodes of her laugh-free sitcom Moesha, so my antipathy is somewhat understandable. However, i do love a good pitch-shifted vocal sample and after hearing Blawan employ a slice of her “I Wanna Be Down” to thrilling effect on “Getting Me Down”, I’ve revised my opinion somewhat. I always enjoy a nice bit of smooth R&B and the Brandy original fits the bill perfectly. As a bonus, the video is a feast of painfully ’90s headgear. No word on a release date for the Blawan track yet but there’s talk of it coming out on a white label at some point.

Dan Bejar has always been something of a maverick, (just look at that insouciant hairstyle) so it’s not entirely surprising that he’s relegated one of his best tracks ever to the status of a vinyl-only bonus track. I admire Destroyer’s latest album - with it’s willful appropriation of soft-jazz noodling - without loving it, but the bonus track “The Laziest River” is something else. A 20 minute long near-instrumental, it’s the Steve Reich/Robert Fripp/Don Henley superjam i didn’t know i needed, but now can’t stop playing

It would be remiss of me not to write something on Holy Ghost!’s debut album seeing as i pinched the title for this blog (initially just because i was listening to the track a lot when i decided to start this thing and then I justified it to myself later with some half-thought out idea that the title represented the fragmented nature of discourse on the internet, or something) from one of their songs. It’s been a long wait for fans of the band to hear this record, their debut single “Hold On” came out way back in 2007 which is an eternity in internet terms.

So has it been worth the wait? Well the only slight disappointment is that when you take into account previously released tracks there’s not quite as much new material as i would like. That said, the old tracks on here are all certified classics in my mind and it would’ve been a shame for anyone new to the band to miss out on them. I wasn’t too enamored of lead single “Do It Again” initially, it seemed a little plodding and what i like most about the band’s best work is how light on it’s feet it is. It’s snuck up on me though, as a lot of their material tends to. I’m still working through the album but I already love the Michael McDonald + Choir extravagance of “Some Children” and “It’s Not Over” which occasionally threatens to turn into New Order’s “Bizzare Love Triangle”. I get the feeling that any fans of Cut Copy who were left feeling slightly disappointed by their latest album will find that this one hits their electro-pop sweet spot.
